Will My Diet Change if I Get Veneers?

Are you thinking about getting veneers? This transformative cosmetic treatment may be just what you need to enjoy a confident, gorgeous smile. But you probably have questions about how it might affect your daily life. For instance, you might wonder, “Will my diet change if I get veneers?” Read on below to learn some basic dos and do nots of eating with veneers.

Temporary vs. Permanent Veneers

Before you get your permanent veneers, you will wear temporary ones for a while — probably for a couple of weeks. Temporary veneers tend to be more susceptible to problems than permanent ones. For example, they are more likely to get pulled off of teeth by sticky foods. They are also more likely to break. Therefore, you will have to be very conscious of what you eat during your time with them.

Permanent veneers are much more durable. In fact, they are designed to stand up to all the rigors of everyday eating and drinking. However, it would still be wise to take some reasonable precautions while you are wearing them. Smart dietary choices can extend their lifespan and keep them looking their best for the long haul.

What Foods Should You Avoid with Veneers?

Here are some examples of foods that you should avoid (or put reasonable limitations on) while you are wearing veneers:

  • Extremely hard foods, like jawbreaker candies, ice, and uncooked veggies. These can chip or break veneers.
  • Highly pigmented items, such as coffee, red wine, and berries. Temporary veneers are more vulnerable to stains than permanent ones, so feel free to indulge in moderation once your permanent veneers are in place. (Here is an extra tip — drink dark liquids through a straw in order to minimize their contact with your teeth.)
  • Alcoholic beverages. Alcohol can have an adverse effect on the material that is used to bind your veneers onto your teeth.
  • Sticky foods, like taffy and caramels. Staying away from these is particularly important when you are wearing temporary veneers because they may pull your veneers off your teeth.

What Can You Eat with Veneers?

Here are some examples of foods that are generally quite safe for veneers:

  • Soft foods. Mashed potatoes, noodles, cooked vegetables, chicken, and tender meats are all good choices.
  • Minimally pigmented foods. Pasta with white sauce, bananas, uncolored dairy products (like milk and plain yogurt), white fish, apples, and cooked cauliflower are a few good examples.

Once your permanent veneers are in place, feel free to eat all of your favorite items, but be aware of the value of moderation! You should also call your dentist right away if you suspect that something you ate has damaged your veneers.

Veneers may necessitate that you make some small changes to your diet. However, you will continue to be able to enjoy a wide variety of snacks and meals.
