Your Child`s First Visit to a Family Dentist versus Pediatric Dentist

Teaching children about oral care starts early. Here at All Dental Center in Watertown, we recommend a child’s first appointment when a child gets a first tooth or by their first birthday. Generally, a first appointment is done quickly to increase a child’s comfort level. The dentist will check for tooth decay, they will inspect the gums, jaws and bite. It’s a perfect opportunity for parents and children to get acquainted with the dentist, the staff, the office and the atmosphere.

It’s sometimes confusing when parents attempt to make an appointment because they are unsure if they should make an appointment with a family dentist or a pediatric dentist.

Who are they qualified to treat?

  • A family dentist  has the ability to serve every member of a family. From grandma and grandpa to mom and dad and all the way down to the new baby and everyone in between. This means he/she gets to know the family and a friendly face will automatically make a child feel more at ease.
  • A pediatric dentist is limited to the patients he/she treats. Typically the range is from infancy into the teens. This dentist is not qualified to treat adults therefore as a family you wouldn’t have as much interaction.

Which type of dentist in Watertown you choose is ultimately up to you. Here at All Dental Center in Watertown we are committed to treating your entire family and we hope you will consider us for your child’s first appointment.
