Porcelain dental veneers are thin pieces of porcelain material that are used to cover the front surface of a tooth or teeth to improve the aesthetics or to protect the tooth's surface from further damage. Dental veneers are permanent. Veneers can improve teeth appearance by changing the size, shape, color or length.
Veneers are an option for the following conditions:
- Stained and discolored teeth
- Teeth that are fractured or chipped on the surface
- Worn down teeth
- Uneven or misaligned teeth and orthodontics is not required
- Gaps between teeth
A color for the new veneers is determined by choosing from a shade guide shown by your dentist in Watertown. But there are other considerations for choosing a right shade such as patient’s complexion, skin tone and the color of surrounding teeth. This is often a very exciting time for a patient if they have never had bright, white teeth.
A very thin layer of enamel will be removed from your tooth/teeth surface to be able to apply a veneer. Next the dentist will take impressions of teeth and will send it to a lab so the veneers can be constructed.
When the veneers are returned from the lab the dentist will place the ceramic veneer in place and ensure that it fits well. The veneers are then permanently cemented to the tooth’s surface using a curing light to assist in hardening the cement.
The dentist will then check to ensure everything is smooth and that the bite is correct. The dentist may have to remove small, tiny portions of other teeth to achieve the perfect fit and result.
Porcelain dental veneers are designed to last between ten and fifteen years. It is essential for the longevity of the veneers to floss and brush regularly, to prevent tooth decay. Regular dental cleanings and check-ups are a must!
