5 Signs It Might Be Time to Replace Your Veneers

Dental veneers are regarded as a permanent cosmetic treatment because once you get them, you should maintain a set indefinitely. However, you cannot expect each set to last forever. Typically, veneers need to be replaced every 10 – 15 years or so. Is it time for you to think about veneer replacement? This blog post discusses some signs that you should visit your cosmetic dentist to talk about revamping your smile.

The Veneers Are Darkening

Because veneers are made out of nonporous porcelain, they are incredibly resistant to stains. However, they can lose their original color over time. This might happen if the cement beneath the veneer absorbs pigment from foods and beverage. Or, if a veneer is damaged, pigments can seep into little scratches and cause a dull appearance. In some cases, discolored veneers can be repaired. Most often, though, a new set is required.

The Veneers Are Damaged

As durable as veneers are, they can incur minor chips and cracks over time. This is especially likely if you often bite your fingernails, chew on ice, or engage in other habits that run a high risk of damage. Some people choose to live with little chips in their veneers, but it would likely be better for your smile’s aesthetics if you replace them.

You Are Experiencing Oral Health Problems

Even if you take excellent care of your teeth, there is still a small chance that you will develop cavities on the ones that are supporting your veneers. There is also a possibility that gum disease will develop. Your dentist may have to remove your veneers to get your oral health back on track. Later, replacing your veneers with a new set may be a viable option.

You Want to Change Your Look

Even if your veneers are still in good shape, you might decide that you want to replace them with a set that looks a little different. For example, many young people opt for bright white veneers. A few decades later, though, they might be more inclined to want a subtler, more natural color for their smile. The decision to replace your veneers solely for aesthetic reasons is not one that should be taken lightly, but it is certainly worth your consideration if you are ready to transition to a new style.

You Are Unhappy with Your Veneers

Most dentists who offer veneers do an excellent job during the design and placement process. However, human error sometimes occurs. If a design flaw in your veneers is causing you discomfort or adversely affecting the way your smile looks, you may want to consider getting a replacement set.
