A Basic Guide to Adjusting to Implant Dentures

Will you be getting implant dentures in the near future? You have a strong bite, a beautiful smile, and many other benefits to look forward to! Before you can fully experience all the advantages of your new prosthetic, however, you will need to adapt to using it. This blog post discusses what you can expect while you are adjusting to implant dentures in Watertown.

Start with Soft Foods

Implant dentures are remarkably durable and sturdy, so they can enable you to eat all of your favorite dishes. However, you should not jump right into eating tough or chewy foods. At first, you should eat soft things, like smoothies, pasta, scrambled eggs, and other items that do not require a lot of effort to consume. After you adjust to how your teeth feel and function in your mouth, you can expand your diet. Eventually, you can expect to reach the point where eating anything feels natural, normal, and easy.

Practice Speaking

Clear speech depends on complex interactions between the teeth and tongue. You can therefore expect your denture to enhance the quality of your pronunciation. Initially, though, you might notice that you have a minor lisp. That is likely to go away after you adjust to speaking with your prosthetic. You can practice your pronunciation by reading out loud or simply making small talk with your family as much as possible.

Expect Some Extra Saliva

A denture is a foreign entity in your mouth, so you will likely produce more saliva than you are used to. Drooling usually goes away fairly quickly. In the meantime, sipping on plenty of water can help to rinse away excess saliva.

Establish Good Habits

Caring for implant dentures in Watertown is fairly simple. However, you will need to make some minor adjustments to your routine. For example, if you have a removable overdenture, you will need to take it out of your mouth for a thorough cleaning at least once a day. If your denture is permanently attached to your implants, you may need to follow other strict hygiene practices to prevent infections.

Ask Your Dentist for Help if Necessary

Your dentist wants you to love your new teeth, so if you run into any issues with your denture, feel free to reach out for help. This is extra-important if you think that your denture is damaged or does not fit correctly.

Most patients adapt to implant dentures quite quickly — much faster than they would adjust to a traditional prosthetic. Hopefully, your new teeth will soon feel like they have always been part of your smile!
