I Am Pregnant — Can I Get Dental Implants?

Woman speaking to dentist about getting dental implants during pregnancy in Watertown

If you are missing one or more teeth and you are expecting a new addition to your family, you may want to welcome your little one into the world with a complete smile. However, getting dental implants during pregnancy in Watertown is not advisable. This blog post discusses why you should wait until after your little one arrives to embark on your tooth replacement journey.

Urgent vs. Non-Urgent Dental Care

Before giving you the go-ahead for any type of procedure, your dentist must consider both its risks and its potential rewards. In some instances, it is necessary to perform complex and extensive dental treatment on pregnant women. For example, addressing a badly infected tooth is urgent because the infection has the potential to spread and harm both a woman and her child. The rewards of treatment outweigh the risks.

Conversely, the need for dental implants is rarely urgent. Since some aspects of the procedure, such as the sedation used during the implant placement surgery, might harm a fetus or embryo, the risks are greater than the potential rewards.

Oral Health Changes During Pregnancy

Women often notice changes to their oral health during pregnancy. For example, hormonal fluctuations may increase the risk of bacterial growth, plaque, and an infection of the gum tissue that is commonly referred to as “pregnancy gum disease.” Any type of gum disease significantly increases the risk of dental implant failure, so it is important that your gums are healthy before you move forward with your tooth replacement procedure.

It is also worth mentioning that some women develop gestational diabetes while they are expecting a little one. Diabetes tends to slow down healing after oral surgery. Since this issue usually goes away soon after delivery, waiting to receive dental implants is the wisest course of action.

Managing Pain After Surgery

Yet another reason why undergoing dental implant placement surgery during pregnancy is not advisable is related to the recovery process following the procedure. Some discomfort is normal. Your dentist may prescribe you some pain medication or recommend that you use certain over the counter products to make your healing process as easy as possible. Most types of painkillers pose risks to a developing baby, so they should not be taken by pregnant women.

You Can Start Planning Now

Even though getting dental implants while pregnant is not an option in most cases, you can still talk to your dentist about your wish to get them. Not only will your dental team help you care for your oral health throughout your pregnancy, but they can also get started on planning your future treatment. Depending on the specifics of your circumstances, you may be able to move ahead with your dental implant procedure soon after your little one arrives. It is possible that you could have a complete smile in a matter of mere months!
